Trash in recycling

Arroyo GrandeAugust 9, 2013

Today I listened to a radio report “Why only a third of our trash is being recycled” and realized that I have been guilty of putting wrong things in my blue recycling bin.

Did you know that the stuff that we put in our blue bins is sorted by hand at the recycling center? If you put plastic bags in your bin (as I did), you make work for the crew because plastic would “gum up the machine.” A quick search on the Web also reveals that we should remove lids or caps from plastic containers before placing them in the bin.

I try to be a responsible citizen and recycle as much as possible, but I have always found it difficult to determine exactly what is recyclable. It would be most helpful if clear and easy-to-find guidelines were made available to us.
