An Avila Beach man killed himself in front of sheriff’s deputies Wednesday evening following a suspected episode of road rage.

At approximately 9 p.m. the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office received a report of shots fired at a pickup truck in the 100 block of Hondonada Road in rural Arroyo Grande.

Detectives believe the incident began when a car driven by 56-year-old Robert Hernandez of Avila Beach was attempting to turn left onto Appy Way off Lopez Drive, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

A pickup attempted to pass Hernandez on the right shoulder of the road, and this escalated into a road rage incident with a gunshot fired at the truck. No one was hurt.

Deputies later located the car and Hernandez at a nearby house in the 100 block of Shelby Way, which they surrounded.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., Hernandez came out of the house and shot himself with a pistol.

He died from the gunshot wound.

The case is under investigation.
