Shallow Pitts

San Luis ObispoAugust 8, 2013

Another shallow, slanted (Tribune, Aug. 4) is attacking Fox News for doing exactly what the other big government networks do routinely. Trying to portray Christians as intolerant and then portraying Muslims as tolerant conflicts with reality.

Substitute a Christian writing a book on Islam and Muhammad, titled “Zealot,” and try to imagine that the interview would not only center on why a Christian would write a book insulting the prophet but also discussions of punishment and retaliation. There would be comments about why the Christian author is so hateful!

Fox may have acted poorly, but less so than our mainstream media do routinely. If you are not someone in the tank for all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-growing government, your point of view is ridiculed. Fox News did not go to the “hate page” or the “bigot page” as all the mainstream media would have done if it were a Christian writer writing negatively about Islam!

Overall, the column was full of stereotyping, name calling, straw men and falsehoods. How about less double standard and more honest and fair rhetoric?

The Tribune is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
