Cal Poly is one of five Big Sky Conference teams ranked in the preseason top 25 poll

Junior Vince Moraga is one of four candidates competing to be Cal Poly’s quarterback starter for the upcoming season.


Cal Poly’s football team is ranked 11th in the preseason FCS coaches poll released Tuesday.

The Mustangs went 9-3 last season and lost to Sam Houston State in the second round of the playoffs. The Bearkats, ranked fourth in this year’s preseason poll, went on to lose to North Dakota State in the national championship game.

North Dakota State tops the coaches’ poll to start this season, followed by Big Sky Conference foes Montana State and Eastern Washington, which tied Cal Poly for the Big Sky title last year.

After Sam Houston State, the rest of the top 10, in order, is Wofford, Central Arkansas, South Dakota State, New Hampshire, Villanova and Illinois State.

Cal Poly is one of five Big Sky teams ranked in the top 25. Northern Arizona checks in at 18th, and Montana is ranked 22nd. Big Sky teams UC Davis and Sacramento State also received votes.

San Diego, which plays at Cal Poly in the Aug. 31 season opener, also received votes for the 

The Sports Network media poll is expected to be released Aug. 13.

The Mustangs named their season captains Tuesday, and they are senior defensive tackle Sullivan Grosz, senior linebacker Johnny Millard, senior offensive lineman Lefi Letuligasenoa and junior slotback Cole Stanford.


Mustangs eighth in Big West coaches’ preseason poll

Cal Poly’s volleyball team has been picked eighth out of nine teams in the Big West Conference’s volleyball preseason coaches’ poll. 

Hawaii was a unanimous favorite to repeat as Big West champs, collecting all nine first-place votes from the coaches. 

Hawaii posted an 18-0 league mark in 2012 to capture its sixth conference championship, returning to the Big West after a 16-year hiatus. 

Cal Poly was 4-26 overall and 3-15 in the Big West last season.

Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge were second and third, respectively in the poll. UC Davis was picked fourth, followed, in order, by UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly and UC Riverside.

Cal Poly opens the season Aug. 30 at the Northern Colorado/Colorado State Tournament.


Poly athletes receive academic honors

Four Cal Poly men’s track and field athletes were named to the all-academic team while the Mustangs women’s track and field team was selected as Scholar Team of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. 

The honors, awarded for 2012-13, were based on a combination of athletic and academic feats.

Devin Bennett (decathlon), Sean Davidson (distance race), John Guerrero (800 meters), and David Namnath (400 hurdles) were the men’s athletes awarded the honor.

The Cal Poly women’s track team posted a team grade-point average of 3.04.
