Letter to the Editor

Thanks for water vigilance

Paso RoblesAugust 4, 2013

I will take this opportunity to thank The Tribune for reporting issues related to conserving our aquifer.

Recently, there have been articles on the recommendations of the Paso Robles Agriculture Alliance for Ground Water Solutions for establishment of a California water district. PRAAGS suggests “leadership, consensus building and practical solutions” would dictate the establishment of a water district and rejects the imposition of restrictions on our agriculture community.

This approach may have been appropriate in the past, when issues with the aquifer began to surface, but not now. At this point, emergency measures are necessary. The county supervisors have received a report detailing action to address groundwater concerns. We must understand existing demands on the aquifer and what we must do to manage the resource.

In my opinion, understanding and managing the Paso Robles groundwater aquifer would dictate that we would know how much water is being used and reliably assess compliance with remedial action provided by our county supervisors.

Perhaps a California water district is the appropriate administrative body to assess and report compliance to the supervisors … but it is the responsibility of our elected county representatives to establish the requirements.

The Tribune is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
