Affordable housing

Avila BeachJuly 17, 2013

Housing affordable to the local workforce is encouraged by multiple readers, initially stimulated by The Tribune editorial advocating affordable housing. This housing could be accomplished, without public or developer subsidies, by requiring maximum-size units and minimum densities until an adequate balance of workforce-affordable housing is achieved.

A planning mechanism establishing temporary overlay zoning could be applied to areas zoned for housing. The county and the cities have statistics quantifying their affordable housing deficiencies. Do any have the political will to address “commute and pollute” by establishing affordable housing overlay zoning?
