Baby maras join Atascadero zoo's brood

Atascadero’s Charles Paddock Zoo has two new additions to its family.

In a surprise to zoo staff, on July 6 two maras were born to a mother with no signs of pregnancy. Also known as Patagonian cavies, maras are small rodents native to South America.

Maras have been on exhibit since 2001, and the new parents arrived in 2012. The two newborns are now on exhibit, ready for visitors.
