Cal Poly pitcher Matt Imhof, who will be a junior left-hander next season, allowed just one run in 6 2⁄3 innings for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team against Japan on Monday.
Imhof came on in the first inning to relieve All-American pitcher Tyler Beede of Vanderbilt.
Beede gave up four runs and only recorded one out when Imhof entered and got a groundout and strikeout to stop the damage.
Team USA lost 5-2 in the third game of the 39th annual Japan-USA series in Hiroshima, Japan.
Imhof struck out six and retired 20 of the 26 batters he faced, throwing 85 pitches.
With the loss, Team USA dropped to 12-2 on the summer.
The two teams meet again Wednesday and Thursday for the final two games of the series.
