Water crisis

CrestonJuly 5, 2013

Thank you for running the series on the water crisis in the Paso Robles groundwater basin. I’m grateful for the increase of awareness this has brought of the severity of this crisis on so many of us who get our water from this basin.

We have been the owners of a small home in the Creston area since 1974, and while at present we are much better off than many homeowners in the Paso Robles groundwater basin, our well is close to its limit, and we are facing having to drill a new well or pay to have water hauled in.

We are a retired couple living on a fixed income. It is a hopeless and frightening feeling to know that your home is threatened, and that you can’t sell it because its value is rapidly declining due to the water crisis, and you can’t afford to drill a new well or have water hauled in. My heart goes out to all those who have already lost so much.

I would feel more excited about the money that the vineyards are bringing into the county if some of it were used to pay for those homeowners’ new wells or water hauled in.
