Carlyn Christianson was sworn in to the San Luis Obispo City Council as its fifth council member Tuesday.

Christianson, a former city planning commissioner and five-year member of the San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission, was elected to the council June 18 by a mail-only special election.

She succeeds Andrew Carter, who resigned in February to take a fulltime job as the city administrator of Guadalupe.

She beat main challenger Paul Brown by 877 votes and Donald Hedrick by 4,236 votes.

Christianson’s term will end Dec. 1, 2014.
