A viable threat

TempletonJuly 3, 2013

After venting its rage at Diablo Canyon for years, I think The Tribune has finally found a worthy target for its pens, spears and arrows — the exploitation of the Paso Robles aquifer by North County vineyard owners.

As a retired Diablo Canyon employee, I believe both Diablo and the vineyards present a viable threat to the health and welfare of the county. In the case of Diablo Canyon, it is regulated by some of the strictest rules ever formulated, and has operated for almost two decades with negligible impact on the environment. It provides a major source of employment and tax revenue for the county and electrical power for the state. The vineyards also provide employment and tax revenue for the county, but their use of the land is apparently not regulated. That should be attended to before the North County dries up and blows away.

The Tribune is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
