Cambria's Riptide tripped up in Clovis

Special to The CambrianJune 29, 2013

The Riptide fast pitch 14-and-under girls softball team — featuring five players from Cambria — lost two of three games in a Clovis tournament this past weekend, June 22 and 23, but Riptide is still in the hunt for a state championship.

On Saturday, Riptide overwhelmed the Sanger Stars, 16-4 after falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first. Riptide tallied two in the bottom of the first (helped by a Maddie Adams home run) and scored eight in the second thanks in part to an RBI triple by Adams and a two-run triple by Maddie May (who drove in four in the game, including a home run).

Things got tougher for Riptide on Sunday morning as they were nipped by the Paso Bearcats, 8-6. Ashley Martinez and May tripled in that game and Adams homered, but it wasn’t enough to top the Bearcats.

On Sunday afternoon, Riptide out-hit Lemoore, seven to five, but the final score was 8-7 in favor of Lemoore. May belted a solo homer and Adams added an RBI double in that effort.

Those two losses notwithstanding, Coach Chris Adams explained that the team has qualified for the California State Games in San Diego July 12 to 14. “We need to raise $3,000 for the team to get down there,” according to Adams.

Riptide is working concessions at softball tournaments at Lila Kaiser Park in Morro Bay and is getting pledges for a “hit-a-thon,” according to Adams. Businesses and individuals interested in sponsoring Riptide should contact Adams, cadams@coastusd.org.
