Leslie Gainer reopens wine store on Burton Drive

Leslie Gainer, who founded Cambria’s  Fermentations wine-tasting shop in 1995, had sold the business in 2007, rented the building to the new owner and moved on.

She was planning to open a similar, updated but highly seasonal wine-and-lifestyle business in Nantucket, Mass., where she also has ties. Then, in a synchronic coincidence earlier this year, Fermentations moved to Main Street, and Gainer switched her business plan to the small Cambria building she still owns in East Village.

The doors to Wine : Taste (just like that, with a colon in the middle with a space on each side), Gainer’s new business at 4056 Burton Drive, opened earlier this week.

“ABC just approved our wine bar patio, our sign is up, doors are open and we’re excited about celebrating Independence Day at Wine : Taste with a little Troublemaker Paso Robles Wine and Bellini’s from Venezia, to name a few tantalizing options,” she wrote in an email.

Cambria contractor Rick Allen did a makeover on the historic little house where sisters Margaret and Lila Soto used to live.

“This building is too important to rush the work,” Gainer said in May. “I feel so honored to be in and be able to respect their history.” The building previously housed other businesses, including The Green Room and Pacific West Art Gallery.

Fermentations has reopened where Keenan’s Cambria Village Pharmacy used to be.

Wine : Taste will serve guests small samples of “fine, really unique, wonderful wines and craft beers,” she said, with bottles and cases for sale and free-standing farm tables instead of a stand-up bar for the inside tasting area.
