About 100 people gathered in front of San Luis Obispo Superior Court on Wednesday for a rally to celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act.

The reactions to Wednesday’s news were a mixture of surprise, excitement and delight.

"The Supreme Court gave us our five-year anniversary present,” said Andrea Wasko, who has been with Meaghan Gilbert for 20 years and married for five. The pair woke up this morning — their five-year anniversary — to the news.

For Grace Lara, the news was still sinking in.

“I’m still trying to consume it all,” Lara said. “It’s exciting. It’s about time.”

But for Laurie Bryant, it was simply something she never believed would come to pass.

“I’m grateful,” Bryant said. “I never thought it would happen.” Clayton Marsh, a youth director with the Central Coast Gay and Lesbian Alliance who organized the rally in downtown San Luis Obispo, was elated at Wednesday’s Supreme Court rulings.

“It’s going to impact all the human beings,” Marsh said.

Marsh speculated that of the 300 local GALA members, at least 150 will probably want to be married within the next couple of years.

“There’s so much ignorance surrounding same-sex marriage,” Marsh said. “I hope this will help increase awareness.
