Two bear sightings reported near San Luis Obispo airport

Police are unsure whether it's the same animal seen Thursday

Tribune staff reportJune 22, 2013

Two people called San Luis Obispo police separately Saturday to report seeing a bear near the airport in San Luis Obispo, police said.

The first caller contacted police at 5 p.m. to report seeing a bear at Broad Street and Fuller Road, south of Tank Farm Road. The caller told police the bear was in a field at the intersection, apparently walking toward Broad Street, according to a news release. Police went to the scene but were unable to find the bear.

The department received a report of a second sighting at 7:45 p.m. A caller stated that she had just seen a large bear in the backyard of a residence on Calle Del Caminos, just north of Fuller Road, in the creek area. According to the news release, numerous officers went to the area but were again unable to locate the bear.

Police believe that the two callers were reporting the same bear but were not able to determine whether it was the same animal reported within the past week in a tree on San Luis Drive. That 200-pound black bear eluded capture after being seen at 8 a.m. and again shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday near San Luis Obispo High School, about three miles north of Saturday's sighting. It escaped by running into a creek bed.

Lt. Bill Proll asks that residents call police if they see a bear in the city.
