Impressive musicians

San Luis ObispoJune 21, 2013

Two winners from the Cal Poly Music Department on May 31 and June 1:

The University Jazz Bands — under the direction of Dr. Paul Rinzler — featured guest trumpet soloist Mike Vax, who was previously first trumpet in the famous Stan Kenton orchestra. He still has lead trumpet “chops” along with very impressive improvising ability, similar to Carl “Doc” Severinsen.

The Cal Poly Symphony, directed by Christopher Woodruff, was excellent in its performance of the symphonic suite, “Scheherazade,” composed by Nicholas Rimsky Korsakov.

From the soulful, sinuous solo violin in the beginning to the brilliant colorful final movement, our emotions were stirred and a standing ovation ensued.

Impressive. Thank you.
