A driver answering his cellphone swerved into oncoming traffic Tuesday afternoon on Highway 46, causing a crash that sent him and two other people to the hospital, according to the CHP.

Pedro Arellano, 50, of San Miguel was driving east on Highway 46 west of Highway 101 around 4 p.m. when, while answering his phone, he swerved across the double-yellow line. His vehicle collided with a vehicle being driven west by Anthony Bianco, 79, of Paso Robles.

Victoria Martinez, 51, of San Miguel was a passenger in Arellano’s vehicle.

All three suffered major injuries: Arellano fractured his leg, chest and arm; Bianco fractured his ankle; and Martinez sprained her wrist and fractured a rib.

Two of the victims were taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, and a third was airlifted to a Fresno hospital.
