Righetti High state champion wrestler highlights signings in multiple sports

sports@thetribunenews.comJune 15, 2013

A local state champion wrestler and many more grapplers are headed to Cal Poly.

Righetti High standout Luke Wilson was announced along with eight other Mustangs wrestling recruits Friday to round out a recruiting class that began with three signees in the fall.

Wilson took the 152-pound title at the CIF State Wrestling Championships in March and was also a standout football player for the Warriors.

At No. 89, Wilson is one of two recruits in the class ranked in InterMat’s top-100 list of high school seniors. Sparks (Nev.) Reed High star Spencer Empey, a three-time Nevada state champ who signed in the fall, is No. 36.

InterMat also ranked Cal Poly’s recruiting class 25th in the nation.

The commits include:
• Joe Applegate of Laguna Hills High (158 pounds)
• Tommy Espinosa of Chula Vista Otay Ranch High (126 pounds)
• Tyler Hecht of Elk Grove Franklin High (285 pounds)
• Nicholas Johnson of Murrieta Valley High (197 pounds)
• Sohrab Movahedi of Northridge Charter Hills High (165 pounds)
• Trent Noon of Clackamas Community College (174 pounds)
• Nick Troquato of Ponderosa High (184 pounds)
• Victor Trujillo of Fair Oaks Bella Vista High (126 pounds)

Mustangs men’s tennis recruiting earns praise

Cal Poly’s recent two-person men’s tennis recruiting class ranks fifth among mid-majors, according to TennisRecruiting.net.

Top-50 recruits Garrett Auproux and Benjamin Donovan comprise the class formed by second-year head coach Nick Carless.

Auproux, a recent graduate of Burbank Burroughs High, is the 39th-ranked recruit in the country, and Donovan, an Advantage Tennis Academy (Germantown, Tenn.) product, ranks 44th.

Mustangs volleyball adds four players

The Cal Poly volleyball team announced the addition of four recruits — a setter, a middle blocker and two outside hitters — for the upcoming season, including a Central Coast standout.

Six-foot-3 middle blocker Lauren Pluim was a three-year starter for Cabrillo, tallying 100 kills, 2 blocks and 83 digs her junior season.

Setter Shannon Fouts (5-7) was a first-team all-state honoree for Sisters (Ore.) High.

Outside hitters Lexi Reddick of San Diego Del Norte High and Anna Gorman of Sammamish Eastlake High round out the class, joining the four players who signed letters of intent in the fall.
