14 & under Riptide win 6th straight in 5 Cities Tourney

Softball team racks up a 9-1 record so far this summer

Special to The CambrianJune 13, 2013

The Riptide softball team continued its winning ways Saturday, June 8, as the 14-and-under squad nipped Five Cities 7-5 and edged the Clovis Bullets 5-3.  Riptide, featuring five players from Cambria, has now won nine of the 10 games it has played this summer season.

Against the Five Cities team (in the Five Cities Tournament in South County), Riptide went ahead 3-0 in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Ashley Martinez. Riptide collected 11 hits in that game, including two by Maddie Adams, and one each by Maddie May and Martinez. Tara Covell gave up one earned run in two innings of pitching and struck out two batters.

In the Clovis game, Adams had three of Riptide’s eight hits, including a triple; Martinez added a hit and an RBI and Covell again gave up just one earned run in two innings of work on the mound. Covell’s control was excellent in that game as eight of her 10 first pitches were strikes.
