Correction: An earlier version of this story gave the wrong day that the damage occurred. The church’s windows were broken early Sunday morning.

A Los Osos church’s stained-glass windows were broken Sunday in a pattern of vandalism that has spanned several years, said David Bresnam, pastoral council president at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

The church, at 2050 Palisades Ave., had several of its stained-glass windows shattered along with most of the rest of the windows early Sunday morning, Bresnam said.

“We’ve been vandalized several times, and each time seems to be getting worse,” he said. “We are just sort of shaken up here.”

According to Bresnam, about four years ago, someone painted anti-Christian messages on the front of the church; a few years later, someone broke into the building and damaged the interior; a year and a half later, someone broke a few windows; and about a year ago, windows were broken again.

Because of the break-ins and vandalism, the church has installed motion-sensing lights and plans to install an alarm system, Bresnam said.

The resident priest of the 200-family congregation lives on the church grounds and was awakened by a loud noise he thought was an earthquake early Saturday, Bresnam said.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office was called and took a report.

Bresnam said the church is getting new floors put in and he doesn’t know how they are going to pay for replacement windows.

“I think the same people are doing it. Why they are doing it, I think it might just be mischief,” he said.
