A bridge and rock shed on Highway 1 in Big Sur is designed to let falling rocks tumble underneath and over the road on their way to the ocean.

Highway 1 to Big Sur will close completely early Monday morning about 23 miles north of Ragged Point, Caltrans has announced.

The road will be closed from midnight to 6 a.m. to allow removal of a working platform at the Pitkins Curve bridge and rock shed project.

An alternate route to Big Sur is Highway 101 to Salinas, then west on Highway 68.

The closure is north of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.

“We are excited to provide limited traffic on the new bridge as project completion nears,” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins. The project is scheduled to be complete in the fall.

The contractor for the $29.5 million project is Golden State Bridge Inc. of Martinez, Calif.
