‘Basak has had too much of a good thing — the sun. Basak is an 11-year-old golden retriever-Labrador mix. He’s a gentle soul who’s great with everyone. Basak is quiet and has good house manners.

“In his previous life, Basak was a backyard dog with little protection from the sun. The excessive exposure resulted in discoid lupus, a condition that left his nose raw. Thankfully, his condition is manageable with sunblock, medication and avoidance of direct sun.

“Discoid lupus is a longterm hazard of the sun. There are short-term hazards, too.

“A car’s interior — on a 72-degree day with windows cracked open — can reach 116 degrees in an hour; the greatest increase occurs in the first 30 minutes. Prolonged heat exposure can raise dogs’ body temperature 5 degrees, causing nerve damage and organ failure. It takes less time for a car’s interior to heat up on even hotter days. Find out more at www.redrover.org/mydogiscool/how-hot-do-cars-get.

“Pickups are risky, too. The sun can heat a truck bed or bed liner enough to burn a dog’s paws. Also, pets left in truck beds without water or shade can suffer heat stroke.

“Keep your pets cool this summer; leave them at home, not in your car or truck.

“And if you’re looking for a sun-sensible dog to stay cool with, call Basak’s foster mom at 550-7577, because Basak’s perfect for a life made in the shade.”
