Katcho to Joetopia: Capitol display not my domain

San Luis ObispoJune 3, 2013

San Luis Obispo County’s diorama gives visitors to the Capitol an outdated look of the region.

Last weekend, Joe Tarica penned a column lamenting the quality of San Luis Obispo County's display at the Capitol and urged me to get involved. A quick phone call to my office by Mr. Tarica would have revealed that it is the responsibility of each county, not the Legislature, to maintain the displays. Since beginning my service in the Assembly, I have received mixed feedback regarding the condition of the display from constituents visiting the Capitol — feedback which I shared with county officials.

As a proud resident of the county, I agree that it may be time to spruce up our display. However, given the myriad critical issues facing the county, I do not fault our local leaders for directing scarce resources elsewhere.

That said, I am heartened by the interest in better marketing our county and am pleased to report that just last week my staff was contacted by the SLO Chamber of Commerce, which inquired about updating the display. I encourage the county to work with the Chamber and other civic groups on an improvement plan. If the county decides to make improvements, I am ready and willing to provide any type of assistance that is requested.
