Success in public office, like most endeavors, depends on being prepared (old Boy Scout motto). As the owner of a small business in San Luis Obispo for more than 30 years, I have attended City Council meetings from time to time and had the opportunity to observe our elected officials. When Paul Brown served on the council before (2004 to 2008), he seemed to me, at times, to be ill-prepared for the meeting. It was sometimes apparent that he either hadnt read or understood the information prepared by city staff or submitted by members of the public, and he ended up voting strictly along ideological lines.
Carlyn Christianson, on the other hand, seems to read, absorb and often question all the information available about an issue before the city or county Planning Commission. If for no other reason than her analytical abilities, her grasp of the issues and her habit of being fully prepared, she gets my vote for City Council.
