A fire in a trash can caused a brief disturbance at a San Luis Obispo student-housing complex Thursday morning.

Just after 8:30 a.m., three trucks with the city's Fire Department responded to the fire at Stenner Glen on Foothill Boulevard.

Firefighters discovered a small fire in one of the dorm rooms in the back of the complex, Capt. David Marshall said.

The room was empty, but there were students in the other living spaces, he said.

The fire was extinguished, and there were no injuries or damage reported.

Marshall said he plans to use the incident to teach students about fire safety.

The cause is still under investigation, he said.

A fire at Stenner Glen in March displaced more than 30 students and left a firefighter injured.
