Help needed to repair vandalized Project Surf Camp trailer

The recent vandalism of an equipment trailer used by Project Surf Camp has the nonprofit organization searching for volunteers to help get it repaired in time for the upcoming summer camp season.

Project Surf Camp, founded by John Taylor in 2006, provides surf lessons in Morro Bay to children with special needs. More than 250 campers participate each year, and the cost is kept low by grants and community donations.

The Morro Bay Police Department notified camp officials on May 16 that the trailer, which was parked on city property near Morro Rock, had been broken into and vandalized.

Executive Director Katy Davis said a side door was pried open, causing damage to the trailer and its lock. The outside of the trailer was also spray-painted, she said.

It was not yet known if any wetsuits or other equipment stored inside the trailer were missing.

Davis said the organization already had to cut back the number of camp programs being offered this year because of a $17,000 shortfall. The added cost of fixing the trailer would further cut into the program, she said.
