Prep Playoff Roundup: Templeton, Coast Union advance in baseball playoffs

Andy Garretson hit a two-run home run and picked up his fifth win of the season on the mound as the Templeton High baseball team defeated Big Bear 16-6 in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 playoffs Tuesdaty.

Garretson was 2 for 5 with three RBI and a walk, and his two-run shot in the third inning gave the Eagles the lead for good at 4-2.

Taylor Tobin was 4 for 5 with three runs, three RBI and two doubles, and Spencer Walsh was 3 for 3 with three runs, three RBI and two doubles for the Eagles.

Templeton had 19 hits, and scored six runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.

The Eagles will face Ontario Christian on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Temecula Valley 9, Arroyo Grande 2

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles allowed seven runs in the bottom half of the inning as they fell in the second round of the Division 2 playoffs.

Chris Davidson was 2 for 3 with a triple and a run in the third inning for Arroyo Grande, and Garrett Ball added an RBI single in the sixth for the Eagles (19-7-3).

Coast Union 3, Concordia 0

Quinton Raethke allowed four hits and struck out five over six shutout innings to help the Broncos advance to the quarterfinals of the Division 7 playoffs.

Coast Union scored all three runs in the third inning, two of which came on a double from Tommy Howard.


Silverado 5, Nipomo 1

The Titans led 1-0 after the second inning, but five unanswered runs from Silverado, four in the sixth inning, gave Nipomo the loss in the second round of the Division 5 playoffs.

Courtney Cuzick scattered six hits over six innings, striking out six in the loss for the Titans (20-6). All five runs allowed by Cuzick were unearned.

Ashley Ruiz was 2 for 4 with a double, Vangie Lopez was 2 for 2 with a run, and Vanessa Davis had an RBI groundout in the second inning for the Titans.

Faith Baptist 7, Coast Union 3

Sage Radecki had a two-run triple in the first inning and later added a double, but the Broncos fell in the second round of the Division 7 playoffs.

Ellie Magnuson also had a double for Coast Union (17-5), and allowed five hits and struck out eight in the complete-game loss.


La Jolla 5, Arroyo Grande 2

The Eagles won just four sets as they fell in the first round of the CIF Southern Regionals after winning their first CIF-Southern Section divisional championship Friday with a 13-5 win over PAC 7 rival San Luis Obispo in Claremont.

Eli Whittle won 6-4, 6-4 in singles, and the doubles team of Derek Lakowske and Tyler Anderson won in three sets for Arroyo Grande (22-6), which was playing a team that has won 44 San Diego Section team championships.

“Although we dropped some close sets, we competed as well as we ever have and ended our team season on a high note,” Arroyo Grande coach Lori Hollister said.

Whittle and Sean Hollister will be playing singles in the CIF-Southern Section Individual Championships beginning Thursday in Carpinteria. 

Lakowske and Cole Laughton will also be playing doubles in the event.
