Prep Playoff Roundup: Nipomo, Morro Bay win in softball playoffs

The Nipomo High softball team won 3-0 in its CIF-Southern Section Division 5 playoff game against Immaculate Heart on Thursday. 

Ashley Ruiz hit an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning for the first run, sparking the beginning of what would be a three-run inning.

Ruiz was 2 for 3, and Jianna Abatti had a squeeze bunt in the sixth to score Ruiz.

Courtney Cuzick (18-5) pitched a complete game, giving up three hits, striking out 11 and walking none.

Marisa Rodriguez was 1 for 2 with a run, and Destiny Fryckman was 1 for 3 with a double for Nipomo (20-5).

Morro Bay 5, Savanna 1

The Pirates used a four-run sixth inning to complete a come-from-behind rally and edge Savanna in the Division 5 playoffs.

Entering the sixth tied at 1, Caitlyn Cowardin hit a three-run, bases-loaded double to put the Pirates ahead for the first time. Following a single, Cowardin scored on a passed ball to complete the four-run inning. 

Marissa Tavares pitched seven innings, giving up two hits with a strikeout and a walk for Morro Bay (13-14).

“We thought we had a good chance to win this game,” Morro Bay coach Roger Pelletier said. “Our pitcher threw strikes, and our defense made plays. And we made all the routine plays we had to make.”

Harvard-Westlake 7, Paso Robles 0

Jenna Wookey, Carly McCall, Chloe Kerns, Monica Garcia and Dakota Rodriguez combined for five total hits in the Bearcats loss in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Jenna Rogers pitched 6 2⁄3 innings, giving up eight hits, walking two and striking out two for Paso Robles (16-10). 

Coast Union 38, Einstein Academy 0

The Broncos’ Ellie Magnuson did a little bit of everything to help Coast Union over Einstein Academy in the Division 7 playoffs. 

She pitched seven innings, walked one, struck out 14 and gave up one hit in the circle. 

At the plate, she was 4 for 4 with a three-run home run in the first inning.

Patty Bucio also went 6 for 6 with five runs for Coast Union (16-4) in the seven-inning game.


Coast Union 6, Trinity Classical Academy 4

Grant Magnuson pitched seven innings, racking up six strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs to lead the Broncos to a win in the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.

At the plate, Tommy Howard went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI, while Gehrig Kniffen went 2 for 4 for Coast Union (14-6).
