Special Olympics: Community shows support for North Coast athletes

cambrian@thetribunenews.comMay 16, 2013

On May 3, members of the Cambria Special Athletes, accompanied by 21 members of the Santa Lucia Middle School Leadership class and more than 30 former Leadership students now attending Coast Union High School, converged at the Cuesta College to compete in the 2013 Special Olympics Spring Regional Games.

The total number of the five Cambrian and San Simeon athletes — Jessie Auricchio, Steve Bunting, Abraham Figueroa, Willie Lambert and Jesus “Chuy” Soto — have participated in the Regional Games exceeds 70.

The team is sponsored by Cambria American Legion Post No. 432 and is supported by every major service organization in the Cambria community — plus more than 50 past and present Leadership students who show up weekly at the Santa Lucia athletic field beginning in March to train and support local special athletes.

The theme of the regional games is, "How far is far, how high is high. I’ll never know, until I try."
