Surfing sessions for local veterans start this week

Weekly surfing sessions for veterans will start Thursday in Pismo Beach through a partnership of San Luis Obispo County Veterans Services and the nonprofit Association of Amputee Surfers, or, AmpSurf.

The program is intended to help local veterans become more active and connect with fellow comrades, while offering an alternative form of physical and mental rehabilitation.

The first session will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Addie Street beach access area in Pismo Beach.

“These sessions will not be ‘surf clinics,’ just local veterans who surf and want to share their love of surfing with other vets,” said Dana Cummings, veterans service officer for San Luis Obispo County.

Surfboards and wetsuits will be provided to those veterans who do not have their own.
