Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothings going to get better. Its not. The Lorax
As a doula, birth educator, and La Leche League leader, I dedicate this quote to five special nurses and true agents of change in our community:
Kathleen Huggins, who began the breastfeeding Warm Line and pushed through one of the first baby-friendly hospital certifications in the country at General Hospital, opening our eyes to what was achievable.
Olga Mireles, for her work with Latino women, both through WIC and at the French Hospital Breastfeeding Clinic, improving the lives and health of many local women and babies.
Marie Chaney, who helped create the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sierra Vista, keeping fragile babies close to home and families.
Charlie Ault, for her years of caring management creating the French Hospital Birthing Center. Her vision, dedication and service are felt every day in the atmosphere there.
Finally, I would like to recognize Julie Merrill, for working not just once, but twice to create a baby-friendly certified hospital for the women, babies and families of San Luis Obispo. Your dedication to the cause of helping babies get the very best start possible amazes me.
Thank you and happy Nurses Appreciation Week!
