Scraps of facts

Morro BayMay 13, 2013

Charles Krauthammer’s May 3 commentary, “Obama’s rapid fall from glory,” claims that after just six months into his second term, Obama is “dead in the water,” partly because of his positions on global warming, universal preschool, gun control and the sequester fallout.

Contrary to Krauthammer’s assertion otherwise, overwhelming scientific evidence shows sea levels rising, glaciers melting, and severe rainstorms and droughts occurring more frequently.

Research also shows children who attend preschool are more likely to graduate from high school, find good jobs and are less likely to be involved in crime, thus saving money in the long run on crime costs and welfare dependency.

Obama did “invest capital” on gun control and won with 90 percent of Americans agreeing with him on universal background checks. Congress failed us, not Obama.

Krauthammer claims Obama “cried wolf” about the pain the sequester would inflict and “nothing happened.” Tell that to the estimated 70,000 kids kicked out of Head Start, 1,200 fewer workplace inspectors, and the 4 million fewer meals provided for seniors — just a few of the cuts affecting the most vulnerable.

Krauthammer is adept at taking scraps of facts and couching them into crafted negative implications to stir up his base.
