Man killed in crash on Hwy. 101 in Nipomo is identified

UPDATE 3:30 p.m. Monday: The driver in the fatal accident has been identified as Todd Pierce, 62, of Del Haven, N.J. The CHP is still investigating what may have caused the accident.

UPDATE 8 a.m. Monday: The driver who died in an accident that happened in Nipomo early Sunday morning was a 62-year old man from Del Haven, New Jersey. The CHP has not yet released his name.

The driver was southbound on Highway 101 at Willow Road at 7:30 a.m. when his 1993 Jeep and the boat he was towing drifted into the center divider and collided with the metal guardrail. The driver then turned right and collided with a guardrail on the west shoulder.

The boat detached and the Jeep overturned down a steep embankment. The man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene, according to authorities.

Original story: A fatal traffic accident occurred in Nipomo early Sunday morning, according to CHP traffic incident logs.

Around 7:30 a.m., a pickup towing a boat went off an overpass on southbound Highway 101 at Willow Road, according to the CHP.

There is one confirmed death, but no name or other details about the accident were released Sunday evening. A CHP dispatcher confirmed that the incident is under investigation.
