Los Osos man faces attempted murder charge in samurai sword attack

A man who allegedly attacked his wife with a samurai sword faces 11 more charges, including attempted murder, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles Haig Guenther, 36, surrendered to a sheriff’s SWAT team that arrived at his Los Osos home Tuesday. The SWAT team arrived after Guenther’s wife drove herself to the hospital, saying Guenther had attacked her with a sword and threatened her with a pistol.

The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered injuries to her hands, legs and abdomen while fending off the assault, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Guenther was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse. But the District Attorney’s Office added more charges, including aggravated mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting corporal injury on a spouse and making terrorist threats. Numerous enhancements were also filed, including committing a crime resulting in great bodily injury and committing a crime with a deadly weapon.

Guenther remains in San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $750,000 bail.
