— A 19-year-old California girl is dead after getting caught in a rock slide while camping with her family in southeastern Utah.

San Juan County deputies say Christine Elizabeth Allen of San Luis Obispo died in the accident that happened about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies say Allen and her family had arrived in the Kane Creek camping area about 6 p.m. and were climbing the cliffs next to their camp.

Officials say Allen's mother saw her daughter sitting on a large sandstone rock and watched as the rock face unexpectedly broke off, sending the girl tumbling about 20 feet.

Authorities say she had severe internal and external injuries, and died at the scene.
