Arroyo Grande High’s golf team edged out Rio Mesa for the CIF-Southern Section Central Coast team championship Monday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

The Eagles scored 390, winning by one stroke in the 15-team championship. Ventura was third at 393.

The Eagles were led by medalist Mitch Martin’s 69. Arroyo Grande also got a 76 from Alex Linn, an 81 from Conner Sandman, an 81 from Josh Schneider and an 83 from Cobe Williams.

“I’m excited,” Arroyo Grande coach Jeff Byars said. “The kids have worked hard all year. It’s always nice to see hard work pay off. In a one-shot deal, anything can happen. They played a good round.”

During the regular season, the Eagles lost only one dual match to San Luis Obispo and also won three invitational tourneys. Byars called this season Arroyo Grande’s best ever. He credited Martin, the team’s best player, with solid play and leadership.

“Mitch has gotten better each and every year,” Byars said. “He’s not only a very good golfer but a great leader.”
