Cambria Reds humble Atascadero 20-0

The Cambria Reds played a Little League team from Atascadero Saturday, April 26, and it was no contest from the first inning on as the Reds dominated 20-0. The Reds scored runs the traditional ways — getting players on base and knocking them in with clean hits — and they also scored without base hits.

The young pitchers for Atascadero had a tough time throwing strikes and yet the Reds were anxious to swing the bats anyway. So there were swinging strikeouts in situations that the ball got past the catcher and the batters took off for first and beat the throw from the catcher.

The next batter swings and misses and the runner that just got to first on a strikeout takes second. The next pitch gets past the catcher again and the runner hustles to third. Yet another passed ball and the runner dashes home.

It went like that. And yet, as coach Gary Stephenson remarked, when the pitcher did throw strikes, the Reds “…were hitting.” Next home game for the Reds is May 7 at Leffingwell Field vs. the Rockies (5 p.m.).
