The Cal Poly baseball team dropped its third straight game Wednesday, losing 5-3 to Pepperdine in Malibu.

The Waves scored five runs in the first two innings, handing Mustangs starter Casey Bloomquist (3-1) his first loss of the season after he gave up five runs — three earned — on seven hits in two innings.

Bloomquist had pitched into the seventh inning in his previous three starts — wins over CSU Bakersfield, Santa Clara and Cal.

Cal Poly (28-14) scored its first run on an RBI groundout from Peter Van Gansen, and added two more when Brain Mundell has an RBI triple and later scored on a groundout.

Mundell finished 2 for 3, and Denver Chavez and Jordan Ellis were each 2 for 5 for the Mustangs.

Nick Torres was 1 for 4 with a double and a run, and David Armendariz was 1 for 4 with an RBI for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs return to conference play with a three-game series against UC Riverside beginning Friday at 6 p.m.

Big West honors Cal Poly’s Prader

Cal Poly senior John Prader was given his second Big West Conference Field Athlete of the Week award of the season after setting a school record in the pole vault in a dual meet with UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.

Prader cleared 18 feet, 71⁄4 inches, eclipsing the previous record by one-half inch, placing him first in the West Region and third nationally this season.
