Grover Beach man killed in crash near Nacimiento Lake is identified

UPDATE 2:25 p.m. Monday: The California Highway Patrol has identified the Grover Beach man killed in a car wreck Friday near Nacimiento Lake as Carl Christopher Merritt, 33.

He was driving a 1999 Mercedes at a high rate of speed on Lynch Canyon Drive near Oak Shore Drive when he failed to negotiate a left-hand turn. The car left the road, hit an embankment and rolled, coming to rest on its roof.

Original story: A 33-year-old Grover Beach man died in a solo car accident Friday night north of Nacimiento Lake, according to the CHP.

Around 10:52 p.m. the man was traveling west on Lynch Canyon Drive east of Oak Shores Drive when his Mercedes failed to negotiate a turn in the road. The vehicle then veered off the road and hit an embankment, rolled and landed on its roof.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

The victim’s name is not being released pending notification of his family.
