Warning sign

CambriaApril 26, 2013

It was recently reported that Atascadero hotels have decided to levy a 2 percent tax on top of the 10 percent city bed tax. This 10 percent is a signal of excessive city overhead. Proceeds will go into a separate fund, as determined by businesses. The group has not decided what to spend the money on! More wasteful/overlapping bureaucracy?

Area promotion is provided by city chambers of commerce and visitors and convention bureaus throughout the county. A temporary emergency tax is understandable — for example, to oppose politicians who advocate for weakening Proposition 13 by reassessing commercial property.

I support the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association’s opposition to this, as detailed in their website. Lobbying and referendums are expensive. Superb services, wine industries and attractions promote our cities.
