3 Arroyo Grande stores sold tobacco to teen in sting, police say

dsneed@thetribunenews.comApril 25, 2013

The Arroyo Grande Police Department conducted a tobacco sting April 8 in which three out of 18 stores sold tobacco products to a teenager.

The three stores that sold to the teen were Albertsons at 1132 W. Branch St., Arroyo Grande Valero at 610 E. Grand Ave. and Chevron at 251 E. Grand Ave.

The city adopted a tobacco retail ordinance in 2005 that requires all retailers to obtain a license to sell tobacco products. An annual fee helps fund enforcement compliance checks.

Retailers who violate the ordinance face a series of penalties including suspension of license, said Melissa Peters with the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department in a news release. More compliance checks are planned.
