Cal Poly Roundup: Cal Poly uses big inning to roll past Cal in baseball

Senior catcher Elliot Stewart and junior left fielder David Armendariz both hit home runs as part of a six-run third-inning rally, leading the Cal Poly baseball team to a 7-1 victory over Cal in a nonconference game Tuesday in Berkeley.

The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Mustangs (27-11).

Cal Poly right-hander Casey Bloomquist (3-0) earned the win, scattering seven hits over 62⁄3 innings. Bloomquist struck out three and walked three.

Southpaw Taylor Chris worked 21⁄3 innings and did not allow a run or a hit, striking out two for the Mustangs.

Cal Poly scored an unearned run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Jimmy Allen.

The Mustangs then broke the game open with their six-run third-inning rally when they sent 10 batters to the plate.

Nick Torres and Brian Mundell produced RBI singles for the Mustangs before Stewart hit the building beyond the left-field fence for his three-run home run. 

Armendariz capped the rally with his solo homer down the left-field line.

Mike Reuvekamp had the lone RBI for the Golden Bears (18-22) in the seventh inning after hitting a double down the left-field line.

Stewart, Armendariz and Tommy Pluschkell each had two hits for Cal Poly, which totaled 11 as a team.

Big West Championships

Taylor Yoshitake shot a 4-over 77 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club  to lead the Mustangs to a sixth-place finish with a team total of 950 over the three days of the tournament.

Yoshitake birdied three holes and carded the best score for the Mustangs for the second day in a row, finishing the championships tied for 17th place individually with a total of 234.

Cal Poly’s Madison Hirsh had birdies on the first and seventh holes on her way to shooting a final-round 78 for a total 239 and a 26th-place finish.

UC Davis won its fourth consecutive Big West championship, finishing with a 5-over 881 as a team for the tournament. Aggie Demi Runas medaled with a 1-under 218 total. 

Long Beach State took second, shooting 910, and UC Irvine took third (922).

Hollander honored

Cal Poly freshman Laura Hollander was named the Big West Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the week after making her season  debut at the Mt. SAC Relays last Friday.

Hollander set a conference record with her mark of 15 minutes, 53.73 seconds in the 5,000 meters of the Olympic Development Elite Division.

The old Big West 5,000 record of 15:58.02 was set by UC Santa Barbara’s Amanda Moreno in 2011. Cal Poly’s school record of 15:50.40 was set by Amy Harper in 1983 before the Mustangs were in the Big West Conference.
