Cal Poly women in fifth at Big West golf championships

UC Davis dominating team competition behind the top two individual golfers

The Cal Poly women’s golf team is in fifth place after the second day of the three-day Big West Conference Championships at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The Mustangs were sixth after Sunday’s opening round. On Monday, Cal Poly carded a 22-over 314 to move into fifth place at 633 and enters today’s final round one shot behind fourth-place Cal State Fullerton (632).

UC Davis is running away with the team title with a 9-over 593 on the par-73 course, but the Aggies were 12-over 304 Monday after a blistering 3-under 289 Sunday.

The Aggies have four golfers in the top nine and a fifth golfer in 10th place to set the pace, 16 strokes ahead of second-place Long Beach State (609). UC Irvine is in third at 618.

UC Davis’ Demi Runas and Andrea Wong both shot 73s Monday. Runas is the individual leader at 1-under 145, three strokes ahead of Wong (148). Long Beach State’s Chaewon Park is another strong back in third at 149.

Taylor Yoshitake is Cal Poly’s top golfer in a tie for 16th place at 157 after shooting a 77 Monday. She was tied for 21st after Sunday’s round.

Kirsten Locke shot a 78 for Cal Poly on Monday and is tied for 19th at 158. She was tied with Yoshitake at 21st after the first round.
