A County Jail inmate attempted suicide Friday by hanging himself in his cell, but was discovered by his cellmate around 3 p.m., according to San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla.

The unidentified inmate was brought to the ground and treated with first aid on site and then taken to a local hospital.

He did not receive any major injuries and is expected to be released from the hospital soon, said Cipolla.

As is standard procedure, an investigation has been opened into the incident.

The victim had been in custody since March on charges of assault and attempted rape.
