A tree blown down in stiff wind gusts at 3:21 p.m. Monday, April 15, left 754 PG&E customers without electricity for about an hour, but 73 customers didn’t get power restored until about 1:39 a.m. Tuesday, according to Blair Jones, a PG&E spokesman.

The tree — which had been identified by PG&E surveyors as one that should be removed — fell across Pineridge Drive near Bradford Road in the Top of the World neighborhood on the southeast corner of Cambria.

Internet, TV and phone connections also were disrupted for a time Tuesday as Charter Cable crews replaced damaged wiring.

The tree was one of five Monterey pines in the area that should be removed to help assure public safety and the reliability of electrical service, according to Eric Daniels, PG&E’s government relations representative. Three of the five pines are on private property, Jones said, and another 11 trees are targeted for pruning, perhaps before the start of fire season.

Monday’s blackout was the third power outage in Cambria since April 4, when an explosion in an underground vault blacked out most of East Village and some residential neighborhoods. Another outage April 8, caused by a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of highways 1 and 46, cut power to 3,450 customers, but most were out for only about an hour.

Wind gusts of 40 mph and above were reported along the North Coast Monday, April 15.
