SLO film festival looking for management help

A crowd gathers at the Fremont Theatre on Thursday for the second day of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival in March.

The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival will be led by a two-person management team instead of a single person, organizers announced this week.

Wendy Eidson, who joined the film festival as artistic director in 2005 and took over as executive director in April 2006, will now serve as its part-time artistic and marketing director. Another part-time employee will oversee day-to-day administrative and fundraising duties as festival director.

According to Eidson, the move means “basically splitting my job in half and sharing it with somebody else.”

“It’s just too big for one person,” said Eidson, who hopes her new post will allow her to focus on innovative new programming as well as her own filmmaking projects. She worked as an assistant film and television director for 20 years before joining the festival.

Eidson said the film festival, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in March 2014, has seen steady growth in attendance, sponsorship and donor support during her tenure.

Overall attendance at this year’s festival, which ran March 6 through 10 at venues throughout San Luis Obispo County, was up 20 percent compared to 2012, she said. Ticket sales, sponsorship revenue and local participation also saw substantial increases this year.

The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival board of directors is currently accepting letters and resumes from anyone interested in applying for the part-time position of festival director. Applicants must respond by May 1.
