Rethinking yard sale

Morro BayApril 17, 2013

Morro Bay Beautiful is proud to have sponsored the Morro Bay citywide yard sale.

We had 179 “official” and registered sellers in 2012. Based on the feedback we’ve received, we believed we would exceed that number this year. Therefore, we pursued recognition for “the most yard sales per capita” with the Guinness Book of Records. Unfortunately, we had fewer “official” sellers this year. There was, however, a huge increase in “unofficial” and unregistered sellers. It appears that more than 50 percent of the sellers did not register and did not support the event.

This sent us a clear message. More than half of our citizens either don’t want to pay the $10 to be on our map, or they just don’t care about this organized event.

Our thinking right now is that next year no one will have to pay, and there will be no map of locations.

We sincerely thank the citizens who financially supported this event and the sponsors that gave us money to advertise it, but now it’s time to reorganize and rethink it. Yes, we will still try to have the Yard Sale weekend in 2014. Check at http://morrobaybeautiful.org after the first of the year.
