Citing economic and family reasons, KK’s Gourmet Bundt Cakes will close its business at 1139 E. Grand Ave. in Arroyo Grande on April 20.

But it will continue to handle special orders and maintain business clients such as the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande and Woodstone Marketplace in Avila Beach, according to owner Karen Phillips. Plus, she said, she’s pursuing obtaining a cottage permit that will allow her to operate out of her home.

“We are restructuring the business,’’ Phillips said, noting that they’re closing the store for various reasons — most notably overhead and the economy. “We are a gourmet item, and a lot of people have taken us off their grocery list.’’

Moreover, she said, her two daughters who work with her in the store are both getting married this summer so will be unavailable to help much.

Phillips started baking bundt cakes for family and friends as a hobby out of her home for seven years, “and then I got so busy that I opened the store.” She’s been open at the current location for seven years.

A store that Phillips opened in Santa Maria in 2010 closed last August for economic reasons, she said.
