Coast Union's first league loss

Special to The CambrianApril 12, 2013

The Bronco baseball team took an unblemished Coast Valley League first place record (3-0) to Orcutt Academy charter school Friday, April 5, and, after the dust had settled, like it or not, one of sport’s most over-used clichés (“you can’t win ‘em all”) was an appropriate answer to the question, “what happened?”

Actually, what happened in the 9-7 defeat at the hands of the Spartans was that Coast Union committed four crucial errors — which cost them dearly — and their pitching was less than stellar. Beyond that, the Broncos had a difficult time getting timely hits; Coast left an even dozen men on base.

This game figured to be one of the toughest that Coast would play this season. Last year the Spartans nipped the Broncos 1-0 in the first game and ripped Coast 12-1 in their second meeting.

The Broncos started off on a positive note, scoring three runs in the first inning, but the Spartans came back with two in the first, four in the third and three more in the fourth and — notwithstanding sophomore Tommy Moreno and junior Grant Magnuson each tallying three hits and two RBI — the Broncos couldn’t make up the difference.

Magnuson threw 72 pitches in three innings.  He gave up just three hits, but he walked seven batters; putting that many Orcutt players on base accounts for the four earned runs he gave up. He also struck out two and has a record of one win and two losses on the season.

Junior Quinten Raethke pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Raethke walked three and tossed 51 total pitches in the game. At the plate, Raethke had one hit (a triple) and scored a run. Zander Stoothoff collected a pair of hits and was hit by a pitch.

On the season, Raethke continues to lead the team with a .478 batting average; he has seven RBIs, 11 hits, seven runs scored and six stolen bases. Among other players with at least 20 plate appearances, Emmany Godinez has a .387 average, has scored 14 runs, has collected 12 hits, and leads the team with 11 stolen bases.

Sophomore Gehrig Kniffen is batting .333 with eight hits and nine RBIs and freshman Lane Sutherland has a .312 average with five hits and five RBIs.

The Broncos defeated Shandon 12-2 on Tuesday, April 9. Godinez got the win; Lane Sutherland and Moreno each tripled and Tommy Howard was two-for-two with an RBI and a double.

The next home game for Coast Union is at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 12. Their opponent is Cuyama Valley High School. The game will be broadcast on KTEA-FM (103.5).
