Firestone Walker Brewing Co. came in at No. 20 in 2012 beer sales by volume among U.S. craft breweries, according to a Brewers Association’s top 50 list released Wednesday.

The Paso Robles brewery ranked ahead of Anchor Brewing Co. of San Francisco (No. 21) but behind other big craft brewery names such as Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. of Chico (No. 2) and Boston Beer Co. (No. 1).

When the nation’s largest breweries are added to the mix, Firestone Walker drops to No. 29. Anheuser-Busch Inc. and Miller-Coors ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

In 2011, Firestone Walker was at No. 23 among craft breweries and at No. 33 overall.

Volume and dollar sales reached record levels in 2012 for craft breweries, according to a news release from the Brewers Association, a trade group that tabulates U.S. brewing industry statistics. The Brewers Association generally defines craft breweries as producing no more than 6 million barrels of beer a year.

The association is not releasing sales numbers for individual breweries until next month. Firestone Walker has declined to disclose its production numbers.

Firestone Walker was established in 1996 in Santa Barbara County and expanded to Paso Robles in 2001.
